How the price works
The single biggest factor is your group size, because one private vehicle and one guide serve everyone — so a couple pays more each than a group of six. Pick-up and drop-off across Nairobi and at both airports is included, the price is the same whichever day of the week you go, and a picnic lunch in the park is part of the day. Read this before you compare quotesYour quoted price is the tour price — vehicle, driver-guide, fuel, the picnic and the transfers. It does not include the KWS park conservation fee, which every visitor pays to enter the park.
That distinction matters, because a cheaper-looking quote elsewhere may simply have left the park fee out. The conservation fee is set by the Kenya Wildlife Service, charged per person — a full day is a single day’s entry — and it differs by category: citizen, resident or non-resident, with separate adult and child rates. It’s paid through the official eCitizen system and can be revised by the government. One honest note: a full day fills the whole day, so it’s generally not the drive for a tight airport connection. If you’re fitting a safari around a flight, the half-day drive or a dedicated layover safari is the better fit.

Nairobi National Park has several gates — the Main (Lang’ata) Gate by the KWS headquarters, the East (Cheetah) Gate, and the Mbagathi Gate. The Land Cruiser has high ground clearance and full four-wheel drive for the park’s dirt roads, and a pop-up roof so everyone can stand for an unobstructed view and a clean camera angle. Every passenger gets a window seat — we cap the group at six precisely so nobody is stuck in a middle over a long day. On board you’ll find seat belts, a first-aid kit, drinking water and charging where the vehicle offers it; a child seat is available on advance request. On a full day the space matters more — room to spread out, keep cameras to hand and settle in for the hours.

The park’s roads are dirt, and to reach the southern sectors and far dams a full day covers, the clearance and traction of a Land Cruiser are what keep you moving — especially after rain, where a two-wheel-drive van can struggle. Four of the Big Five — with time on your side
Nairobi National Park is one of Kenya’s finest places to see wild rhino, and holds four of the Big Five. The full day sees the same cast as a half-day — but the extra hours meaningfully improve your odds on the harder animals.
Black and white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, plains zebra, eland, hartebeest, impala, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle, waterbuck, warthog, and (at the Hippo Pools) hippo and crocodile.
Lion, cheetah on the open grass, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, serval, and — least predictable of all — leopard. The time to track is exactly what tips these your way.
No wild elephant — the park is too small for elephant range. If elephants matter to you, we add the Sheldrick orphanage on a circuit day.

The park is more varied than its size suggests — and a full day is the drive that takes it all in, north to south, rather than working the accessible loops.
Across the day you move through open savanna grassland, acacia woodland, riverine forest along the Mbagathi and Mokoyeti rivers, seasonal wetlands and the dams that draw wildlife to water, with rocky outcrops and skyline viewpoints where the plains meet the city. The southern side opens towards the Athi-Kapiti dispersal area — the wild land the park breathes through — and it’s the extra hours that let you get down there.
A full day can take in the Main Gate grasslands and the Ivory Burning Site monument, Hyena Dam and Athi Dam, the Embakasi plains, the forested western section, and the Hippo Pools and its nature trail, with the far southern circuits and their dams that a half-day leaves out. Your guide threads these together around where the wildlife is on the day.

Time of day. A full day is built to catch both of the park’s active windows — the cool, busy morning and the golden-hour surge — with the quiet heat of midday for the picnic and the Hippo Pools walk. You’re in the park for the best of the light at both ends.
Time of year. The park rewards a full day year-round, as Nairobi doesn’t follow the Mara’s migration calendar. The drier months — roughly late June to October and January to February — give firmer roads, thinner grass and wildlife gathered around water, which helps on the longer southern circuits; the green season after rain brings lush scenery, dramatic skies and fewer crowds, with the occasional muddy track where the 4×4 earns its keep.
How far ahead to book. A day or two’s notice is usually enough, and we often accommodate same-day requests, but weekends, holidays and peak season fill faster — and a picnic preference, a child seat or a larger group is easier to arrange with a little lead time.
