The Nairobi Wildlife Circuit

The park game drive, the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, the Giraffe Centre and more — five wildlife experiences that fit into one Nairobi day, if you sequence them right. Here’s how they combine.

What the Nairobi wildlife circuit is

Five wildlife experiences, one Nairobi day

In one sentenceNairobi’s wildlife circuit is five attractions — the national park game drive, the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, the Giraffe Centre, the Nairobi Safari Walk and the Nairobi Animal Orphanage — that fit into a half or full day around a few fixed opening times, all clustered on the Langata side of the city.

Do them in the right order and you can meet orphaned elephants, hand-feed an endangered giraffe and watch rhino on the plains in a single morning. Do them in the wrong order and the day falls apart, because one of them is only open for sixty minutes.

That’s what this guide is really about: not just what the attractions are, but how they thread together. The game drive combines with the orphanage and the Giraffe Centre naturally; it does not combine with a same-day transfer to the Mara. The whole thing is a scheduling problem, and getting it right is where a local operator earns their place.

A quick boundary first, so you know what this page covers. The circuit here is Nairobi’s wildlife — animals, orphanages, the park. Nairobi’s cultural and heritage sights are a different kind of day out.

Looking for the city & culture, not the wildlife?

The Karen Blixen Museum, the Nairobi National Museum, Bomas of Kenya, markets and city tours are covered by the Nairobi city specialists — see Nairobi.guide. We can fold a cultural stop into a safari day on request, but the wildlife circuit is what we run.

The five attractions

What’s on the circuit

Four sit within the wildlife circuit itself; the fifth is the national park game drive that anchors it. Each opens into its own full guide.

Open 6 a.m.–6 p.m. · best at dawn

The Nairobi National Park game drive

The heart of the circuit — a game drive for lion, rhino, buffalo, giraffe and cheetah on open plains against the skyline. Strongest in the first hours after the gate opens.

A raised boardwalk near the Main Gate where you see Kenyan habitats and species on foot. A gentle complement to a game drive — not a substitute for one, and often confused with it.

The Nairobi Animal Orphanage

A Kenya Wildlife Service rescue-and-rehabilitation centre at the Main Gate. A different place from the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, which it’s constantly mixed up with.

Exact opening hours for the Giraffe Centre, Safari Walk and Animal Orphanage shift from time to time — we confirm the current times when we build your day, and Sheldrick’s one-hour window needs booking ahead.

How a day fits together

Two fixed points decide the whole day

The scheduling logicAlmost everything on the circuit is open through the day — but two points are fixed: the park is best at the 6 a.m. opening, and Sheldrick is only open 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Build the day around those two and the rest slots in; ignore them and it doesn’t work.

Look at the day laid out below. The Giraffe Centre, Safari Walk and Animal Orphanage are flexible — you can reach them any time in the daytime. The game drive and the orphanage are not. So the drive goes first, at first light when the animals are active; you exit in time to reach Sheldrick for eleven; and the flexible stops fill the space around them.

A Nairobi wildlife day — the park and Sheldrick are fixed, the rest is flexible
Fact: Sheldrick opens for one hour and the park pays off at dawn. Mechanism: two fixed points can’t both be at the wrong end of the day. Consequence: the order is forced — drive first, orphanage at eleven, giraffes after. Advice: we run it in exactly that sequence, and tell you honestly what to drop if your time is short.

The classic Nairobi day

One morning, three genuine wildlife experiences

Orphaned baby elephants feeding at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi National Park

The classic circuit day runs a dawn game drive in the park, the Sheldrick orphanage at eleven, and the Giraffe Centre after noon — a game drive, orphaned elephants and an endangered giraffe, all before lunch. It’s the day most first-time visitors to Nairobi want, and the one the whole circuit is built to deliver.

There are two ways to book it. The classic elephant-and-giraffe day keeps it to those three headline stops, sequenced tightly. The full circuit day adds the Safari Walk and the Animal Orphanage for anyone who wants everything — a packed but doable day. We’ll steer you to whichever fits your pace and your time.

Build your circuit day

Half a day, a full day, or built around the family

Not everyone wants the same circuit. If your time is short, a half-day pairs the game drive with one or two of the flexible stops. With a full day you can do the lot. Families tend to want the Giraffe Centre and the orphanage weighted heavily, with a shorter drive; photographers want the park at first light and less of the rest.

Because we run our own vehicles and guides, we build the day around you rather than a fixed departure — the right stops, in the right order, at the right pace. Tell us who’s travelling and how long you have, and we’ll draw up a day that works and cost it honestly.

Quick answers

Nairobi wildlife circuit FAQs

Not in the wild — the park has no wild elephant, because it’s too small for elephant range. That’s exactly why the wildlife circuit exists: the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust orphanage, inside the park, lets you meet orphaned elephants at their 11 a.m. feed, completing the experience the drive can’t. Visiting Sheldrick →

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust opens to visitors for one hour a day, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, every day except 25 December, and you need to book ahead. It’s reached via the KWS Mbagathi Gate. That single fixed hour is the anchor the rest of a circuit day is built around. The orphanage visit →

Yes — it’s the classic Nairobi day. You drive the park from the 6 a.m. opening, exit in time to reach Sheldrick for its 11 a.m. window, then visit the Giraffe Centre afterwards. The order matters, because the orphanage won’t wait and the drive has to happen at first light to be worth doing. The classic day →

No, and it’s a common mix-up. The Nairobi Safari Walk is a raised boardwalk near the Main Gate where you see Kenyan habitats and species on foot — a curated walk, not a drive through the wild park. It’s a pleasant add-on to a game drive, especially for families, but it isn’t a substitute for one. Safari Walk vs game drive →

No — they’re two different places. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is an elephant orphanage, open 11 a.m. to noon, on the Mbagathi side of the park. The Nairobi Animal Orphanage is a Kenya Wildlife Service rescue centre at the Main Gate, home to a range of rescued species and open through the day. People book one meaning the other; we make sure you get the one you want. The Animal Orphanage →

Plan a full day for the classic three-stop circuit — a dawn game drive, Sheldrick at eleven and the Giraffe Centre after noon — finishing early-to-mid afternoon. A shorter half-day version pairs the drive with one or two flexible stops. Adding the Safari Walk and Animal Orphanage makes it a packed full day. The full circuit day →
