Planning your safari
How Long Do You Need?
From a spare morning to a two-week grand tour — an honest guide to how many days a Kenya safari really takes, and how to spend them.
Start here
There’s a great trip at any length
In shortYou can enjoy Nairobi National Park in as little as a few hours, and see the city’s wildlife highlights in one or two days. A classic safari to the Maasai Mara needs at least two or three nights to be worthwhile, and combining parks takes five to seven days. There’s a rewarding trip at almost any length.
How long you need depends entirely on what you want to see. Here’s an honest guide, from a spare morning between flights to a grand multi-park tour.
The quick win
Short on time? Start with Nairobi
Nairobi is the one place in Kenya where a real safari fits into a spare morning, an afternoon, or a day between flights.
A few hours
On a long layover or an early arrival, a short game drive in Nairobi National Park is enough to see rhino, giraffe and plains game just minutes from the airport. Safari on a layover →
Half or full day
A half-day drive suits a relaxed morning; a full day lets you explore the whole park at leisure, with a picnic stop. Full-day game drive →
One to two days
Add the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, and you have Nairobi’s wildlife in full over a day or two. The wildlife circuit →
The bigger picture
A fuller safari beyond the city
For most people, Nairobi is the start rather than the whole trip — and the great parks need time to reach and enjoy.
A classic Kenya safari heads to the Maasai Mara or another of the great parks, and those need time. As a rule of thumb, give each park at least two or three nights: enough for the drives to settle into a rhythm, for the light to change morning and evening, and for the wildlife to reveal itself. Two parks make a fine week; three or more, with a mix of landscapes, fill ten days or a fortnight beautifully.
The travel between Kenya’s parks is real, so a single night rarely justifies the journey. Two or three nights per park is the sweet spot for a relaxed, rewarding safari — fewer, and you spend more time moving than watching. Our Maasai Mara safari →

Frequently asked questions
How-long FAQs
The basics
It depends on what you want. Nairobi’s wildlife fills a day or two; a classic Mara safari needs three or four days including travel; a multi-park trip runs five to fourteen days.
In Nairobi, yes — a day covers the national park and a highlight like the Giraffe Centre or Sheldrick Orphanage. For the Mara and other parks, you’ll want more.
Yes. With a long enough layover, a game drive in Nairobi National Park — minutes from the airport — is very doable. Safari on a layover →
Out in the parks
At least two or three nights. That gives you unhurried morning and afternoon drives, and the best chance at the big cats and, in season, the migration.
Two or three as a rule. A single night rarely justifies the travel between Kenya’s parks.
Around five to seven days lets you enjoy two parks properly with the travel between them — for example, the Mara plus Amboseli or Lake Nakuru.
In Nairobi National Park, rhino, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and often lion — a genuine taste of safari in a single morning.
Planning it well
Very much — it’s a gentle, wildlife-rich start with no travel fatigue, and an easy way to add a day of safari at the beginning or end of a bigger trip.
About an hour by light aircraft, or five to six hours by road. That travel is exactly why we suggest at least two or three nights there.
Around four to seven days: a day in Nairobi and three or four nights in the Mara, or a two-park week. Enough to feel unhurried without a huge time commitment.
Easily, and it’s a popular length — a week comfortably covers Nairobi plus one or two of the major parks.
With children or a packed multi-park route, yes — building in slower days and pool time keeps a longer safari enjoyable. Safari with kids →
